Acclaimed Teen Psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour Visits St. Luke’s

A day filled with interactive assemblies and smaller groups addresses stress, conflict, and other challenges of adolescence.

St. Luke’s hosted psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour on Wednesday, October 17. Damour is a regular contributor to The New York Times and CBS News. Her book Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood was an instant New York Times best-seller. Damour headlined a day and evening filled with insights and information for adolescents and the grownups in their lives.

During student assemblies, Damour addressed topics such as stress and conflict. She actively engaged students encouraging them to share their imagined “worst day ever” and getting them to brainstorm coping mechanisms or “recovery” strategies, in Damour’s language.

Damour spoke with St. Luke’s faculty before school and with parents at an evening event. For both groups, she emphasized the tremendous rate of change that takes place in teens as they head into adulthood. Damour pointed out that what can appear to be erratic, frustrating, and confusing behavior is often just a normal part of growing up.
