Alternative High School Program Discussed In New Canaan: Report

The Board of Education is perhaps not being as transparent as it could be on the issue, according to one board member.

NEW CANAAN, CT — The Board of Education is considering launching an alternative high school program next year, but a lot of parents and residents likely don't know much about it because the board has not discussed it publicly, writes the New Canaan Advertiser.

Not that the board is necessarily hiding it, but a recent discussion about it centered on the real estate aspects of the plan, which was talked about in executive session.

The matter came to light when board member Maria Naughton suggested having the early May meeting minutes altered to reflect that the real estate issue was being discussed in relation to where to put an alternative high school program. Her proposal was voted down.

Most area communities have alternative high school programs, which are designed for a small number of students who, for various reasons, may not be reaching their potential in a traditional high school setting.

The New Canaan School District has considered launching such a program before but has held off. The matter appears to be back on the table, though a location has either not yet been decided or announced.
