NEW CANAAN, CT — A New Canaan High School senior made waves this spring as an intern at SoundWaters, the region's leading organization for hands-on climate science and environmental education.
According to a news release provided this week by SoundWaters, Meghan Stewart recently spent five weeks immersed in the day-to-day operations at the SoundWaters Coastal Education Center at Cove Island Park in Stamford.
Instead of attending traditional classes in the final stretch of her high school career, she chose to step outside the classroom and straight into Long Island Sound, according to the release.
The release notes she was among a select group of high school interns who gained hands-on experience in environmental science.
Working alongside professional SoundWaters educators, Stewart helped deliver science programs to more than 2,000 students, ranging from preschoolers to middle schoolers, according to the release.
Her days were spent leading hands-on experiments in classroom and laboratory settings and conducting fieldwork aboard boats on Holly Pond, the release notes.
"This internship pushed me to take on responsibilities I had never experienced before," Stewart said in a news release. "It helped me become more confident in my ability to lead and make decisions."
Stewart will attend California Polytechnic State University this fall.
According to the release, the SoundWaters High School Internship Program is more than just work experience, it's a launching pad for personal growth.
"It is an opportunity for students to grow as leaders, educators and communicators," SoundWaters Director of Education Christina Genz said in a news release. "Our interns bring energy to everything they do. They take on real responsibility, connect with students in meaningful ways and leave with skills that extend far beyond the classroom."
