NEW CANAAN, CT — Students across town enjoyed the "best first day ever" as they officially returned to New Canaan Public Schools for the start of classes Thursday, according to the district.
In an email to Patch, Superintendent Bryan Luizzi said NCPS experienced "an excellent first day" of the 2026-2027 academic year.
"As I've been saying to everyone who will listen, this is the best first day ever," Luizzi said, "and it's going to be the best school year yet!"
Luizzi said New Canaan students, faculty and staff were energized and excited to meet each other Thursday and officially start the new school year.

"Our district leadership team visited every school this morning," Luizzi said, "and there were wide smiles and excitement everywhere."
Traffic also operated smoothly during drop-off and pickup times at each school in town Thursday, according to Luizzi.
"The morning ran smoothly, and the buses did a fantastic job with their timing and runs," Luizzi said. "We've been practicing the runs over the past few weeks, and that practice paid dividends this morning as the day began smoothly for all of our riders."
Luizzi also noted district officials are thrilled the new school year is finally underway.
"Because of our faculty and staff, our school and classrooms are ready for a wonderful school year ahead," Luizzi said, "and because of our kids and families, we love coming to work every day. Our work in public schools is the most important work on the planet, and days like today, when we come together to welcome our students and begin a new school year together, remind us why."
