Black Bear Spotted In New Canaan: Animal Control

Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn also offered tips for residents who encounter a bear in town and how to avoid attracting them.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A black bear that was spotted Sunday morning at Irwin Park has made its way back toward New York, according to New Canaan Animal Control.

Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn told Patch the bear was spotted in the park around 7 a.m., however he received reports of the bear heading back to New York from three different residents.

"None of the bears we have in New Canaan live here," Godejohn said in an email. "To the best of my knowledge, bears come into New Canaan just to pass through from New York and Wilton."

While Godejohn confirmed black bears have been spotted in town before, he noted the bears in New Canaan typically keep to themselves. He also encouraged any resident who sees a bear in town not to approach or feed the animal.

"If a bear approaches you, don't run," Godejohn said. "Instead, make yourself look big by waving your arms and slowly back away towards a safe structure, like a house or a car."

According to Godejohn, walking with a dog is a good bear deterrent as black bears are scared of barking dogs, even smaller dogs like chihuahuas.

"When jogging or hiking trails, wear bells or a noise maker that will alert the bear that you’re in the area so that you don't sneak up on one," Godejohn said. "You can even place bells on your dog's collar or harness."

Residents should also place their trash cans inside a garage or shed if possible and be careful not to leave unattended food outside of their homes. Bird feeders can also attract bears, Godejohn said.

Anyone who sees a bear in town is urged to call New Canaan Animal Control at 203-594-3510 or the New Canaan Police Department at 203-594-3500.
