Car Fire Good Reason to Get Cell Tower Operational Sooner

A car fire in New Canaan that almost killed a woman has spurred local officials to urge getting a new cellular phone tower operational sooner than planned.

An article in the New Canaan Advertiser said the tower located at Silver Hill Hospital on Valley Road is scheduled to be turned on Oct. 22.

On Monday, a woman trapped in a car almost died in a car fire because no one trying to help could use their cell phones.

Keith Coppins, the cell tower project manager who is with Phoenix Partners, told teh Advertiser that the town site had been finished for a while, but Frontier and Eversource were still sorting out power issues.

First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III said he has been in touch with Eversource, and the company assured him it was trying to get the tower operational before the planned Oct. 22 date.
