Chinese New Year Celebrated at St. Luke's

A dumpling-making station, chopstick races and Chinese calligraphy were just some of the fun activities to ring in the Chinese New Year.

A dumpling-making station, Chinese calligraphy, games and colorful decorations were all part of St. Luke’s School's Chinese New Year celebration last week. There was a festive atmosphere with student-made paper cuts, cherry blossom blow paintings, lucky characters on red papers and lanterns adorning the dining hall, hallways, and windows. St. Luke's Mandarin V Independent Study student Emma Seel ‘21 put spring couplets on the front doors that welcomed everyone as they entered the building. Upper School Mandarin teacher Jingjing Lai Laoshi shared, “Spring couplets placed on entrance doorways is a common Chinese New Year custom to help bring good luck.”

Having a special meal together and making dumplings are Chinese New Year traditions that were also celebrated at St. Luke's. Thanks to FLIK Dining Services and some parent volunteers, students learned how to make dumplings at a special station set up in the school's Dining Commons. Activities were part of the fun too with chopstick races, names written in Chinese calligraphy on bookmarks and a Kahoot! trivia game. The China Care club held a fundraiser selling Chinese treats as well.

Upper School Mandarin teacher Jingjing Lai Laoshi, St. Luke’s parents Shan Guan, Lingru Seel, John Seel, and Penny Peng, St. Luke’s Mandarin students, China Care Club members, and Chris Clark and the entire FLIK team, all helped to created an authentic Chinese New Year celebration at St. Luke's School this year.
