Curator Chosen For Annual Silvermine Arts Center Event
The 68th annual Art of the Northeast exhibition opens on July 14.

NEW CANAAN, CT - From the Silvermine Arts Center: The Silvermine Arts Center has announced that Patricia Hickson, Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum, will curate its 68th annual Art of the Northeast exhibition. AoNE is Silvermine’s signature show, which highlights the diversity of work that is currently being made in the Northeast by emerging and established artists. The show will open on Saturday, July 14 and run through August 25. Submissions are now open with a May 25 deadline.
Patricia Hickson has been the Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, since 2009. There, she oversees the contemporary art collection and acquisitions, organizes special exhibitions, and leads the MATRIX program, a series of changing solo exhibitions of contemporary art. Her MATRIX projects have included artists Mark Bradford, Dulce Chacón, Mark Dion, Shaun Gladwell, and Vanessa German. In 2015 she organized the exhibition Warhol & Mapplethorpe: Guise & Dolls, which included a publication by Yale University Press. Hickson previously held curatorial positions at the Des Moines Art Center, Williams College Museum of Art, San Jose Museum of Art, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Hickson earned a BA in art from Bates College and a MA in art history from Williams College.
The Best in Show prize for Art of the Northeast is a solo exhibition at Silvermine Arts Center with a $3,000 stipend for show-related expenses. The curator will have at her discretion the ability to select a suite of three to five works by an individual artist. To be considered for the Best in Show Prize, artists are required to enter a minimum of three works. The competition is open to all artists, 17 years of age and older residing in CT,
DE, MA, MD (D.C.), ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI & VT. Eligible artwork must have been completed after January 1, 2016, and fall within the restrictions outlined in the prospectus. Entry fee is a flat $40 for up to 10 entries. Finalists will be announced on the evening of July 3.

The Silvermine Galleries are recognized as one of New England’s most respected showcases for established and emerging artists. In its nearly 100 years on the New England art scene, Silvermine’s frequently changing exhibitions have included one- person shows, national and regional juried competitions, as well as curated shows, which have included prominent artists such as Christo and Jeanne Claude, Faith Ringgold, Brent Green, Robert Gober, Julie Heffernan, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, Kiki Smith, and Jasper Johns.
