Details Released For 2023 New Canaan Fishing Derby

Kids can try to catch the biggest and best trout during the annual fishing derby at Mill Pond in New Canaan next month.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Kids can try to catch the biggest and best trout during the annual fishing derby April 15 at Mill Pond.

According to a news release provided by the town, the 2023 Goerge Cogswell Memorial Fishing Derby from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., with first lines in at 8:30 a.m. sharp. Registration is available online or in person at 8 a.m. the day of the event.

A secret stocking of the pond with plenty of trout will take place ahead of derby day, town officials said.

Children ages 15 and younger will compete for special prizes awarded in several categories, including the first boy and first girl to catch a fish and the largest fish caught. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

The event is free of charge and is sponsored by the New Canaan Highway Department, with assistance from the Recreation Department, Department of Public Works, the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, Police Benevolent Association, New Canaan Fire Department and local merchants.

According to town officials, the "fish fund" is always looking for private donations to help with the costs of the event. Anyone wishing to help can send a check to the "Fish Management Fund," Town of New Canaan – Attn: DPW Fish Mgmt., 77 Main Street, New Canaan, CT 06840.
