About Sitting Pretty Arrives on Elm Street in New Canaan
Sitting Pretty, a boutique shop specializing in a collection of finely curated home furnishings, has opened at 111 Elm Street, Unit 4, in the heart of downtown New Canaan. Laura Mason, the shop’s owner, previously operated Sitting Pretty at Sconset Square in Westport. Laura decided to relocate to New Canaan in recognition of the unparalleled opportunity to place her collection among high-end retailers such as Lilly Pulitzer, J. McLaughlin, and Ralph Lauren, which share her preppy aesthetic and colorful sensibilities.
Sitting Pretty New Canaan celebrates interior design and the cultivation of a beautiful home. Her shop is filled with carefully chosen pieces, many of which have been discovered by Laura on her travels through Europe. Much like a museum gallery curator, Laura sees her shop as a way to promote talented artists and designers from around the world. These include furniture by acclaimed interior designer Bunny Williams, paisley pillows by English fashion designer Matthew Williamson, Palm Beach style chinoiserie prints, handwoven silk velvet ikat pillows and accessories from Italy, and needlepoint weekender tote bags from Stubbs & Wootton. Laura was inspired to name her shop “Sitting Pretty” because it symbolizes being in a great place in life; or well-seated.
Sitting Pretty New Canaan will be featuring signed and numbered fine art prints from selected artists. The cosmopolitan flavor of the Sitting Pretty collection features vibrant home furnishings in luxurious fabrics. Colorful patterns and prints abound, ranging from classic blue and white combinations to whimsical monkeys and Albrecht Dürer hares from the Albertina Museum Gift Shop in Vienna. Each item tells a story. There are silk table runners from Bologna and multi-colored grape lamps imported from France. The collections come from near and far, including local ceramic artist Rosalind Shaffer.
Laura Mason has deep roots in Fairfield County, having grown up in nearby Westport. She majored in Art History at the University of Connecticut and later studied interior design at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Laura has decorated homes in Palm Beach County and had her own design studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She appreciates well-executed design and celebrates the work of her fellow artists and designers. As an arbiter of taste, Laura loves what she does.
