NEW CANAAN, CT — The New Canaan Fire Marshal's office has provided a list of essential fire safety tips for residents to remember.

According to the town's Facebook page, closing doors at night can significantly increase residents' safety during a fire as it reduces fire spread, limits damage, keeps temperatures down and can save lives.

Fire officials noted 50 percent of home fires happen between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Closing bedroom doors before sleeping can help keep residents safe.

Fire needs oxygen to burn. A closed door keeps more oxygen in the room, slowing the fire’s spread, according to fire officials.

Officials also recommended residents close the door behind them as they exit a fire.

"Closed doors make a huge difference," the post reads. "They can reduce temperatures from 1,000° to 100°, and keep carbon monoxide levels 90 percent lower."

Officials said fire spreads faster with modern materials. Synthetic materials in furniture and construction accelerate fire spread.

The following additional safety tips were provided by the New Canaan Fire Marshal's office:

  • Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly.
  • Plan your escape; have a fire escape plan with two ways out of each room and a designated meeting spot outside.
