Foxes Spotted In Downtown New Canaan, Residents Asked Not To Feed Them

New Canaan Animal Control urges residents not to feed foxes and other wildlife spotted in town.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Foxes have been spotted in various areas of New Canaan, prompting a local animal control officer to remind residents not to feed the animals and other wildlife spotted in town.

In an email to Patch, Allyson Halm said foxes have become prevalent in New Canaan's downtown area with known litters on Maple Street, Harrison Avenue and Lakeview Avenue.

While foxes do not pose a threat to residents as a rule, Halm said the department has received numerous calls about a "friendly fox" in the area of Richmond Hill Road and Park Street.

Halm said the fox was recently spotted in town and appeared to be young and healthy, however she is concerned it is being fed by someone, which would explain the animal's lack of fear around humans.

"Wild animals that associate humans with food presents a risk to everyone and most likely won't end well for this fox," Halm said in an email. "Please do not feed the wild animals."
