Get Ready To Bring Your Own Bags, New Canaan
The retail plastic bag ban is slated to take effect in six months.
NEW CANAAN, CT — A ban on single-use retail plastic bags will take effect in New Canaan late this summer following overwhelming approval last week by the Town Council.
New Canaan is the latest Fairfield County community to ban such plastic bags, in an effort "to preserve and protect the environment." Westport, Greenwich and Stamford are among the area communities to enact similar bans, and Darien appears to be on the cusp of also adopting a ban.
The New Canaan Town Council passed the new ordinance on Feb. 27 by a vote of 9-2, writes the New Canaan Advertiser.

The ban is slated to take effect in six months, or on or about Aug. 27, to give retail establishments time to prepare for the change.
Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags for carrying purchased items, though some businesses can continue to use recyclable paper bags and charge customers $0.10 per bag.
