Hands Off Our Schools Amasses Over $25,000 In Donations In 2Q

Activist group keeps growing after successfully blocking forced consolidation of Connecticut school districts.

(The Invisible Hand)

From The Invisible Hand: Hands Off Our Schools today announced record grassroots fundraising with over $25,000 in the second quarter. Donations reflect a growing movement in favor of local control of Connecticut’s schools.

This movement helped stop three bills from becoming law that would have hurt our towns, schools, and kids by forcibly collectivizing our schools under the control of a new regional level of unaccountable government. Two of the bills were sponsored by senior members of the legislative majority and one was sponsored by Gov. Ned Lamont.

Our 10,000 members plan to be ready if our schools are again in the next legislative session. This movement includes parents, teachers, and other supporters interested in protecting our towns’ autonomy, our schools’ excellence, and our children’s future.

Hundreds of Hands Off Our Schools members spoke at live hearings and thousands submitted written testimony in opposition to the forced regionalization plans offered by Gov. Ned Lamont and others. Our ongoing fundraising efforts will help spread our message that the overwhelming majority of Connecticut families oppose forced regionalization.

Hands Off Our Schools member Chris DeMuth Jr asked, “why were our schools under such threats to begin with?” and “how can we make sure than no one who threatened them has the ability to do so ever again?” It is a small victory that their specific bills were stopped. It is a larger problem that the same people have total control of Connecticut’s state government, which allows them to bring back similar proposals at any time.

About Hands Off Our Schools
Hands Off Our Schools is a statewide, non-partisan movement that advocates for local decision-making in education for all school districts within Connecticut. We support voluntary shared services between school districts and between school districts and municipal governments to improve or maintain educational outcomes and reduce costs. We support voluntary regionalization of school districts for the purpose of improving educational outcomes and reducing costs. We support the removal of state imposed barriers that unnecessarily drive up education costs and/or inhibit voluntary shared services and regionalization. We support consideration of measures focused on improving educational outcomes across all school districts. We oppose forced regionalization of school districts and state imposed punitive measures to coerce regionalization.
