UPDATE: Police Have Obtained Hit-and-Run Vehicle, Suspect is New Canaan Resident

Police have taken the suspected vehicle used during Wednesday's hit-and-run into custody.

6:49 p.m.: New Canaan police have identified the car suspected to have been involved in Wednesday evening's hit-and-run as a "greyish" 2008 Infiniti QX56 sports utility vehicle. As of 5:30 p.m., the SUV had been taken into custody by the New Canaan police.

Police also believe a 32-year-old female resident of New Canaan was driving the car at the time of the incident. Investigators say a witness came forward and described the car and driver to the police.

"We have the vehicle and we're gonna be examining it and processing it for evidence," Police Spokeswoman Sergeant Carol Ogrinc said. "Depending on what we have it may go to a lab. There's a process and there's a lot of work still to be done. It could be weeks before we get an arrest warrant."

Investigators are not releasing the suspect's name until they acquire an arrest warrant, but police confirmed they had contacted a member of the suspect's family. Paperwork for further warrants have been filed in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

No warrant was required for seizure of the suspect's vehicle because the SUV's passenger side view mirror was missing, giving police probable cause, Ogrinc confirmed.

Investigators are currently seeking a search and seizure warrant to examine the vehicle and obtain additional evidence.

1:44 p.m.: Police have confirmed the victim is Jayaraman Krishna of 1769 Oenoke Ridge Road. According to Police Spokeswoman Sergeant Carol Ogrinc, police have "some good leads," and have devoted three detectives to the case.

It is still unclear whether the side view mirror left at the scene of the crime originated from a GMC vehicle. Officers plan to set up a roadblock on Oenoke Ridge Road around 4:30 p.m. to question drivers and look for potential witnesses. [4:15 p.m.: The road block has been cancelled.]

The first 48 hours of any investigation are crucial to finding the suspect, according to Ogrinc. Police continue to encourage any witnesses to come forward with information.

Original Story: The victim of Wednesday evening's fatal hit-and-run has been identified as 82-year-old Jayaraman Krishna of 1769 Oenoke Ridge Road, according to relatives of the victim.

"He was a great father and a lovely grandfather," the victim's son, J. Krishna said Thursday morning. "He was in fine health... that's the part we're all struggling with. If he was sick and a strain on the medical system at least we could say that... But to go away like this, to be hit like that is really painful for us."

New Canaan police received reports of a man laying in the road at 4:41 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The family of the victim confirm Krishna was getting his mail when the incident occurred.

Krishna was transported to Norwalk Hospital and later died from multiple blunt traumatic injuries, according to the chief medical examiner's office. The driver who hit Krishna did not stop and left nothing behind but a side view mirror that police believe came from a 2002 or newer GMC vehicle.

"My mother was in the house and she was praying at [the time of the incident]. The next thing she remembers there were police taking her to the hospital," Krishna said. "This is something we were waiting to happen. Cars are speeding on this road all the time... This is a 30 mph road and I see people driving at 65. We've gotta do something about this before it happens again."

New Canaan Police Chief Ed Nadriczny says there is an extensive investigation underway involving cooperation with other departments including state police and Pound Ridge police. Nadriczny says the investigation could include canvassing auto repair shops in New York and Connecticut to alert them of a vehicle missing its passenger side view mirror.

The victim's family was visibly distraught Thursday morning, however the victim's son expressed forgiveness for the driver.

"Say it was a 20-year-old who did this, you don't want to prosecute him and turn his life to misery. That's not going to bring my father back," Krishna said, "We just want this speeding to stop. Destroying another person's life isn't going to make it better, mistakes do happen."

Krishna believes the town needs to make a real effort to control speeding on Oenoke Ridge Road.

"I'm thinking very seriously with this that maybe I ought to do something, talk to Town Hall," and make sure speed limits are enforced, Krishna said.

Nadriczny says speeding is the most common complaint his department receives.

"We put enforcement where we can and when we can," Nadriczny said. "Last year we stopped over 7,000 speeders."

However, Nadriczny was still unsure whether Wednesday's hit-and-run will lead to more rigid enforcement of the speed limit on Oenoke Ridge Road.

"We still need to look more closely at what happened," he said.

Wednesday's incident is the second hit-and-run to occur on Oenoke Ridge Road in less than three months. On May 21, 2010, Margaret McDonald of South Salem struck an 82-year-old bicyclist with her car while traveling northbound on Oenoke Ridge Road. The victim, Thomas Scheuer of New Canaan, survived with serious injuries. McDonald later turned herself in to New Canaan police on Aug. 3.

Jayaraman Krishna is survived by his wife, son, two grandchildren and in-laws. Krishna's son says the funeral service will be held Saturday in New Canaan after the body is cremated. Police ask anyone with information on the case or neighbors with video surveillance to call 203-594-3500.
