John Reeve Bermingham, of New Canaan, Ct. died quietly this weekend at the Waveny Care facility. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was 88.
John, born on Jan. 22, 1926, was the last surviving child of Luke V. Bermingham and Leslie W. Reeve both of Oyster Bay, NY and Mattituck, NY, who were formally introduced by former President Theodore Roosevelt.

John Bermingham graduated from Mattituck High School in 1942, and entered the U.S. Navy where he attended Cornell University for a naval intelligence program. He went on to serve in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Essex aircraft carrier and completed his tour of duty in the South Pacific in 1948.
Upon his discharge from the U.S. Navy, John entered Princeton University, an affiliation he cherished for his whole life. He remained an active alumnus throughout his life and last attended his 65th reunion.

He married Janet Louise Maul on April 15, 1950 in New York City where they lived until they moved to Greenwich. They resided in Greenwich for 43 years, ultimately settling in New Canaan.
He survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Janet Maul Bermingham, of New Canaan; three children, Leslie B. Madden of New Canaan, John R. Bermingham, Jr. of Windsor Locks, Geoffrey B.Bermingham also of New Canaan, and five grandchildren, Phoebe W. Madden, Luke R. Bermingham, Tess C.Bermingham, Wickham R. Bermingham, and William C. Bermingham.
Known for his humble nature and crackling wit, John enjoyed his life in Connecticut surrounded by his children, his grandchildren and the love of his life, Janet. He will be missed but much remembered. As Janet said recently of him,”I wish it could have been longer, but it couldn’t have been any better”.
