May Baskets Deliver Spring Cheer to New Canaan Country School

The springtime tradition reinforces a yearlong focus for Beginners ages 4 and 5 on what it means to be kind and the role of acts of caring.

This past week, kindness was sprinkled across the New Canaan Country School campus in the form of May Baskets delivered by students ages 4 and 5. The students, called “Beginners” at the Pre-K through Grade 9 school, decorated small, paper baskets, filled them with flowers and hung them on doorknobs throughout the school’s buildings. Recipients were delighted to receive the annual harbingers of spring.

“This tradition highlights so beautifully what we know to be true about children - that they are capable of understanding and appreciating the concept of giving without expecting anything in return,” said Early Childhood Teacher Carin Walden. “Every day we are working to support the natural inclination of the children towards cultivating kindness by recognizing the small acts of caring that permeate our time together; kind words, listening ears, helping hands, shared smiles, the children balancing their needs with the needs of others.”

Ms. Walden’s class was joined by Ms. Bean’s class in this festive, spring activity.
