Natural Gas Coming To Parts Of New Canaan: Eversource

The project is slated to take three years.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Utility company Eversource is preparing to launch a three-year, $25 million natural gas project to serve parts of New Canaan, company officials announced.

"This project in New Canaan is another example of our efforts to make natural gas available to more communities across Connecticut," said Eversource President of Gas Operations Bill Akley in a statement. "We continue to hear from more and more people who want access to this efficient and environmentally-friendly fuel to heat their homes or businesses, and we’re working hard to make it happen."

Added First Selectman Rob Mallozzi, "A lot of hard work and conversations took place to make this happen and I am delighted that natural gas expansion is here. It is a tremendous opportunity for our community and one that will benefit us for many years to come."

The New Canaan gas expansion project will initially involve the installation of 4.7 miles of underground pipeline along a proposed route that includes State Route 106 and South Avenue (Route 124) to connect natural gas to New Canaan’s downtown business district, New Canaan High School, Saxe Middle School, South Elementary School, Waveny Care Center and the New Canaan YMCA.

Eversource will hold neighborhood forums, beginning later this summer, to update residents and businesses on project details, information and on the natural gas conversion process.

"Once construction is underway, Eversource works cooperatively with community leaders and customers to minimize the impact to traffic and coordinate with other roadwork happening in the area," according to company officials.

From an Eversource release:

New customers will be able to use natural gas for home heating, water heating, clothes drying, cooking, as well as barbecuing, fueling firepits, and even heating swimming pools and hot tubs. In addition to being dramatically cleaner - 30 percent less CO2 and 99 percent less sulfur than heating oil – natural gas is more convenient, requiring no deliveries and less equipment maintenance.
