Eighth Grade Boys Achieve Two More Victories Against Darien and Westport

New Canaan boys’ eighth grade red team achieved two impressive victories over Darien and Westport, but had tough loss to Wilton in recent games

New Canaan 53, Darien 47
The New Canaan eighth grade boys red team came out strong with a 4-0 lead in the first minute of the game. Then Darien answered with two baskets to tie up the game. However, New Canaan pulled ahead by the end of the first quarter 14-11. Darien continued to fight hard in the second quarter but New Canaan continued the pressure with a field goal and a three pointer by CJ D’Virgilio, two field goals by Augo Frey, and additional baskets from Angel Negron, Conor West, Nico Savini, and John Peiser. West also sank four key free throws to bring the lead to 26-22 at the half. In the second half Darien came on strong and led in the middle of the fourth quarter by two points 44-42. However, they were no match for New Canaan’s offense. D’Virgilio hit two more three-pointers and a field goal in the second half, contributing 16 points overall in the game, with West contributing 9 points. The New Canaan defense dominated the boards with West, Frey, and Peiser pulling down rebounds and contributing block shots. Also scoring for New Canaan Frey (7), Negron (7), Peiser (4), Savini (4), Wyatt Wilson (2), Will Rechterman (2), and Clark Grigsby (2).

New Canaan 47, Wilton 59
New Canaan fought hard but couldn’t overcome Wilton who led 24-14 in the first half. Wilton pressed hard on defense and dropped lay-ups off of New Canaan turnovers. New Canaan came out fighting in the second half scoring 33 points, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Wilton. Peiser (13 points) and Frey (8 points) sank key lay-ups from rebounded baskets to help close the gap. Savini (9 points) and D’Virgilio (8 points) added key points in the second half from jump shots and three pointers. Negron, Peiser, and Frey were also tough on the boards in the second half with over 5 rebounds each. Also scoring for New Canaan were Oliver Crookenden (3), Negron (2),Will Rechterman (2), and Wyatt Wilson (2).

New Canaan 57, Westport 17
Although New Canaan had a slow start against Westport with a tie in first quarter 5-5, NC came out fighting in the second quarter with aggressive defense and steals by Grigsby and Wilson. Grigsby and D’Virgilio each sunk 3-pointers which sparked the momentum that continued throughout the game. Strong rebounding from Negron, Peiser, Frey and West also shut down the Westport Gold offense. At the half, New Canaan led 32-8. Savini was on fire in the second half contributing five field goals and a 3-pointer, sinking 13 points overall. Negron and D’Virgilio each knocked down 10 points overall, with 3-pointers and field goals. Also scoring for New Canaan were Frey (7), Grigsby (5), Wilson (5), West (5), and Peiser (2) to achieve another exciting victory 57-17.
