New Canaan Car Crash Leads To DUI Arrest: Police
The one-vehicle crash occurred in January.
NEW CANAAN, CT — A 60-year-old New Canaan man arrested on a warrant this week charging him with driving under the influence in connection with a January car crash on Springwater Lane in New Canaan, according to police.
The crash occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 22, and when officers arrived they "located the involved vehicle off the road and in a ditch."
The vehicle also appeared to have struck a tree before coming to rest in the ditch, and officers soon located the driver, Richard M. Stewart, of Hillcrest Road.

"Upon speaking with Stewart (the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle) officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his mouth," wrote New Canaan police in a statement.
Based on the nature of the crash, Stewart was transported to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation, and police subsequently obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Stewart surrendered to police Thursday evening, posted bond on bail of $2,500 and was released. He is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on March 4.
