New Canaan Coronavirus Update: A 6th Resident Dies

New Canaan has more than 200 volunteers who are helping the Human Services Department delivery groceries to residents.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A sixth New Canaan resident has died of complications from the new coronavirus (COVID-19), and the town has 55 confirmed cases as of Wednesday, according to Mike Handler, the town's director of Emergency Management.

The number of confirmed cases in New Canaan is expected to continue to rise, in part because results from the town’s March 26 drive-thru testing site are still outstanding, Handler added.

In Fairfield County, the number of new positive cases went from 1,870 to 1,986 as of Wednesday, with Norwalk (315) and Stamford (437) representing nearly half of those cases.

"It should come as no surprise that we have more than 200 volunteers working with our Human Services team," Handler said in a statement. "Between our volunteer/senior pairing program and our food pantry we are currently serving groceries to over 210 residents. Additionally, our outreach program makes regular contact with over 1,300 seniors. All of this is in addition to the great outreach work being done throughout our community by our not-for-profit and faith-based partners. This is why we call New Canaan home."
