New Canaan Coronavirus Update: 9 Have Died At Local Nursing Home

Of New Canaan's 18 coronavirus-related deaths, half have been from one nursing home, according to state health officials.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Of the state's 375 coronavirus-related deaths in nursing homes as of Thursday, nine have occurred at New Canaan's Waveny Care Center, according to data released by Gov. Ned Lamont.

The figure represents half of the 18 deaths in New Canaan as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Statewide, nursing home fatalities represent more than a third of Connecticut's 971 COVID-19 deaths.

In his Thursday evening coronavirus statement, New Canaan's Director of Emergency Management Mike Handler partially addressed the issue. All but two of New Canaan's COVID-19 fatalities have been among patients who were above the age of 80. (Don't miss local and statewide news about coronavirus developments and precautions. "Of the 139 total positive infections to date, 28 percent have been associated with Waveny LifeCare Network and 9 percent have been associated with Silver Hill Hospital," Handler said in a statement on the town's website. "Please keep in mind that Waveny has been conducting comprehensive testing of its residents and their more than 500 employees, which can partially explain the higher incidence of infection."

As of Thursday, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Connecticut nursing homes was 1,713. Statewide, the total number of confirmed cases was 15,884.
