"I want to thank everyone who has volunteered to support our seniors," says Emergency Management Director Mike Handler.
NEW CANAAN, CT — The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) has reached 24 in New Canaan as of Friday, according to Mike Handler, the town's director of Emergency Management.
Statewide, the number of cases is 1,291, and there have been 27 deaths in Connecticut from complications of COVID-19, state officials said.
Handler stressed that the number of confirmed cases is sure to rise because there are still results pending from new tests for the virus.

"As the weather gets nicer, we cannot lose sight of how important it is to avoid all social gatherings as we must continue to protect our community," Handler said in a March 27 statement. "Walking our many trails while maintaining proper social distancing is acceptable.
Playing with non-family members in our parks and fields is NOT. If we do not see complete
compliance, we will not hesitate to close all fields and parks."

In recent days, volunteers and others have helped to deliver meals to elderly residents, which Handler appreciated.
"I want to thank everyone who has volunteered to support our seniors," he said. "This is truly a herculean effort by an amazing team of town, private, faith-based and not-for-profit volunteers all working together."
