New Canaan Country School 8th & 9th Graders, Teachers Go on Trips

Students and their teachers travel, hike and work together during off-campus trips as a way to establish cohesive bonds.

New Canaan Country School eighth and ninth graders spent time off campus in September participating in team building and problem solving activities via outdoor challenges and personal growth opportunities. Trips week is an annual tradition at the Pre-K through Grade 9 school.

“Trips lay the foundation for class cohesiveness, something essential to creating a safe space in the classroom where students do deep thinking through exploring their ideas and testing theories,” said Head of Upper School, Karl Palmgren.

As learning is the residue of thinking, building positive relationships with both peers and faculty is essential. Accompanied by both trained guides and their teachers, students use these trips to build on relationships that already existed and create new friendships and a positive common experience within their class.

Eighth graders spent a few days at Camp Dudley in Westport, NY participating in high and low ropes courses, a midnight trek, and other team building activities. The ninth grade tested their mettle and leadership skills against the elements while traversing 3,500 foot Catskill peaks, and they did so with a unique combination of determination and panache.

“Each year the grade trip has served as a springboard for a year of personal growth and school leadership for our Upper School students,” said Mr. Palmgren.
