New Canaan Country School Buddies Take Hour of STEAM Challenge

Students in Pre-K through Grade 9 participated in a hands-on activity that included Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math skills.

New Canaan Country School took the Hour of STEAM Challenge Dec. 19. School-wide, students in Pre-K through Grade 9 spread across classrooms, common spaces and hallways to make a three-tiered, freestanding snowperson with tissue paper, straws, cotton balls, pipe cleaners and tape. Working in their buddy pairs (older and younger students), students designed and built their creations during a vibrant hour of collaboration and connection.

The term STEAM refers to using a wide variety of hands-on activities that include Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. These activities support academic learning and the development of a mindset that values playfulness, experimentation, growth, iteration, collaboration and community.

“The goal of this event was for all students to experience the balance between practical and abstract thinking skills, to use trial and error, creativity, communication, and artistic skills to build something functional and fun,” said Director of Innovation Aron Back who organized the event with Lower School Science Teacher Chantal Detlefs and Lower School Science Assistant Timber Peck.
