The New Canaan FC U11 Girls Red Team defeated the Trumbull United Heat on Sunday amid cold temperatures and autumn snow flurries.

As the New Canaan offense got off to a cold start in the first half, the tough defensive play that has been the Red Team’s signature all season took center stage. The defense of Nola Kammerer and Kate Caione, with Ava Gizzie in the goal thwarted all of Trumbull’s attempts to score and the half ended in a 0-0 tie.

The scoring in the second half began as Caroline Underwood weaved her way past the Trumbull defense and buried a shot in the net after receiving a lead pass from Ava Gizzie. With the score now 1-0, Katharine Byrne was fouled just outside the box drawing a free kick. Gizzie took the kick for New Canaan and bent the shot into the upper corner of the goal to put the Red Team up 2-0.

Trumbull would not go down quietly and after a hand ball was called against New Canaan in the box, the Heat scored on a penalty kick to close the gap to 2-1. With the lead now cut to a single goal, the New Canaan offense turned up the pressure. Attacking deep into the Trumbull zone Ava Gizzie netted a shot and added an insurance goal to the New Canaan tally.

Once again the New Canaan defense held fast anchored by Ellie Gallois in goal and the day ended with a 3-1 victory. The Red Team’s record is now 3-0-1 for the season.
