New Canaan Fire Marshal Offers Winter Safety Reminders

The New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office reminds residents that snow and ice can block exterior household vents, such as furnaces and boilers.

NEW CANAAN, CT — As residents continue to clear snow from Sunday's major snowstorm, and more winter weather possibly in the forecast for this weekend, the New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office has provided a list of winter safety reminders for residents.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, the fire marshal's office said snow and ice can block exterior household vents, including furnaces, boilers, water heaters and dryer vents, during winter weather.

"When vents are blocked, proper airflow is restricted," the post reads, "which can shut down heating systems or allow dangerous carbon monoxide to build up inside your home."

The following tips to help residents stay safe this winter were shared to the town's Facebook page:

  • Check exterior vents regularly, especially after snowstorms or drifting snow.
  • Gently clear snow and ice using a broom or your hands (avoid sharp or metal tools).
  • Keep at least 2–3 feet of clearance around vent openings.
  • If a vent repeatedly freezes or becomes blocked, contact a qualified professional.
