According to the Fire Marshal's Office, smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps indicating a low battery, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.

When replacing a battery on the alarms that allow for that, follow a list of manufacturer's batteries on the back of the alarm or in the manufacturer's instructions. The smoke alarm may not work properly if an incorrect battery is used, according to the Fire Marshal's Office.

Residents who own a security system with integrated smoke detectors are also reminded these systems require annual maintenance as well.

Residents who are unable to change their batteries may call fire headquarters at 203-594-3140 to arrange for firefighters to come to their residences for assistance.

Anyone with questions or concerns about their smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, alarm systems and other fire safety topics are urged to contact the New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office at 203-594-3030, or the New Canaan Fire Department at 203-594-3140.
