New Canaan Fixture 'Irresistibles' Moving up Main Street

Plans call for the store to close Jan. 30 as it moves to the other side of East Avenue, abandoning its Main Street location of 25 years.

Dottie Gardiner and Nicole Amato, manager and assistant manager, respectively, of Irresistibles downtown, say the shop is moving from its longtime (25 years) location at 104 Main St. to 86 Main St.—a space previously occupied by The Adirondack Store, they say—on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

If the move takes an extra day to finish, it's possible the reopening will happen Feb. 1, they said.

New Canaan Chamber of Commerce President Tucker Murphy said it's a "great thing" that the shop is staying in town. A strong synergy also should develop between customers shopping at Irresistibles and Island Outfitters located next door to the new space.

"I think they attract the same types of customers so they could build and feed off of each other, which is nice," Murphy said. "There's a real benefit in stopping into one and going to the other."

Prior to the move, the shop is taking an additional 40 percent off of apparel that's already on sale, Gardiner said.

An east coast store, the New Canaan shop is one of 14 such stores owned by a Marblehead, MA man, she said.

It isn't clear from town tax records whether the new space is larger, smaller or about the same size in terms of square footage. That's because, according to the Assessor's Office, the buildings that house Irresistibles now and after the move are broken up into different spaces within the same street address. It also isn't clear what will move into the space to be vacated by the women's apparel and accessories store.
