New Canaan HS Choral Director Is Named Stamford Chorale Director

Love to sing? The Stamford Chorale invites you to the first rehearsal of the fall season on Sept. 2. “Mozart – A Musical Genius” is the theme of the concert to be presented Dec. 14 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stamford.

This year the chorale, which has been bringing the best in choral music to the Stamford area for more than 60 years, welcomes the multi-talented David Gomez as permanent conductor. He is the director of choral activities at New Canaan High School, where he leads the highly ranked Madrigal Ensemble. Previously, he directed the Brooklyn Borough-Wide Chorus and was a conductor at the Summer Arts Institute in New York City. He is a choral curriculum consultant for the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall.

He also is a film and TV composer and the founder of Alma Music Designs, a New York-based company that produces music for all media. He directs the advanced placement music theory program in New Canaan and hosts an open music theory internet channel called “InMusicTheory.”

Mr. Gomez, who was guest conductor for the chorale’s spring concert of modern music, says, “Our repertoire has no boundaries and can range from early music to music of the contemporary. Whatever we tackle, we aim to have a great time making the music come to life, with an emphasis on blending, precise diction and elegance of tone.”

The Stamford Chorale began as the New Canaan Community Glee Club in 1949 and later was known as The MasterSingers of Greater Stamford. In 2002, the group was reincorporated as a non-profit 501(c) organization. The chorale gives two concerts a year and performs at other community events. Members come from Fairfield and Westchester counties.

The chorale rehearses at the Atria, 77 Third St., Stamford, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. each Tuesday September to May. No auditions are required. New members are welcome until Sept. 16. Dues are $150 a semester and include the cost of music.
