New Canaan Launches Drug Abuse Prevention Website

The town is one of the first in the state to launch such an effort, according to officials.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Following the naming of a behavior health director, New Canaan announced it is taking another proactive step to help residents deal with drug addiction with the launch of a substance use education website, www.drugfreenc.com. New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski and First Selectmen Kevin Moynihan made the announcement Monday, and the move makes New Canaan one of the first in the state to have its own such website.

According to the two, the mission of Drug Free New Canaan is to share New Canaan centered substance use information, which educates the New Canaan Community about practical and successful models for prevention, recovery, and support.

"Given the nationwide and local opioid crisis, there is a real need for more effective substance use help and education. This website is a step in the right direction," said First Selectman Moynihan in a statement. In May, the town named John Santopietro, M.D., President and Medical Director of the local Silver Hill Hospital, as New Canaan's Director of Behavioral Health.

Added Chief Krolikowski, "Very often, the incidents we handle involve the use of abuse of substances. We are confident that this website will help educate and guide New Canaan residents that have concerns about a friend or a family member’s use of substances."

Visitors to the website "can find local resources related to alcohol abuse, vaping, smoking, the abuse of both prescription and illegal drugs, and behavioral health," and also answer and discuss questions to determine if they or a loved one needs help.
