New Canaan – While most of the Northeast was celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, The New Canaan Women’s Platform Tennis League held a very special Breast Cancer Awareness “Play for P.I.N.K.” Event. The event featured a pro-exhibition with breakfast, followed by a round robin tournament with league participants. The exhibition featured the number one nationally ranked Women’s Platform Tennis team, Vicki Staklasova and Ana Brzova competing against a top-ranked recreational Men’s Team from New Canaan. The tournament included over 70 participants -- all playing to raise funds for Breast Cancer research.
Since Play for P.I.N.K. was founded in 1990, events around the country have raised over $34 million for breast cancer research. Play for P.I.N.K. donated $4,250,000 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 2013 which will be used to fund at least 17 life-saving research projects throughout the next fiscal year. “We are happy to be a part of the fund raising effort to support research,” said Cindy Sheehy, event coordinator. “Breast Cancer has touched the lives of many of the women and men who are attended the event today. We are grateful for their support and friendship.”
Each year at the end of the paddle season, The New Canaan Women’s Platform Tennis League’s select a charitable organization to support with matching funds from both organizations. “We are happy to support Play for P.I.N.K. this year and hope our contribution will further help research projects”, says Tonya Russo, New Canaan Women’s Platform Tennis League Co-Chairman.
