New Canaan Parks Commission Elects New Chairman
George Benington was elected chairman of the town's parks and recreation commission following a close vote during a recent meeting.
NEW CANAAN, CT — George Benington was elected chairman of the town's parks and recreation commission following a close vote during a recent meeting, taking over the role from Rona Siegel.
At the start of the Jan. 12 meeting, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan conducted the election and asked for nominations for chair. Francesca Segalas nominated Siegel to be reappointed while commission member Gene Goodman nominated Benington.
With two nominees, commission members voted in favor of Benington in a close vote of 6-5. Segalas was also unanimously reappointed to her role as secretary, as no other nominations were named.

Moynihan congratulated Benington and thanked Siegel for her time serving as chair.
"Rona, I want to thank you for a terrific couple years of service," Moynihan said. "As we talked about earlier today, we'd like to have you remain a partner with George for the ensuing year."

Siegel, meanwhile, congratulated Benington and said she would be glad to stay on through the end of the year.
"Anything I can do to help," Siegel said.
Both Benington and commission member Hank Green expressed thanked Siegel for all her hard work and dedication as chair.
"Thank you Rona for your fantastic service," Benington said. "I look forward to working with you in the year ahead too."
Green said he seconded Benington's remarks.
"You have been exceptional, just exceptional...your commitment, the time you've put in, your mastery of the issues," Green said. "On behalf of the town, thank you."
Siegel noted it was her pleasure and continued to conduct that night's meeting.
Following the election, Moynihan took a moment to express his gratitude to the entire commission and offered a brief preview of the year ahead.
"I want thank all you members of the parks and recreation commission for serving," Moynihan said. "We have an important agenda coming up this year, and I look forward to all your continued service."
