New Canaan Police Chief Makes Case for Restoring Budget Cut

The Board of Selectmen recommended cuts to the salary, overtime and vehicle budgets for the department.

New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski asked the Board of Finance to not follow the Board of Selectmen’s suggestions for cuts to the department’s salary, overtime and vehicle budgets.

The Board of Selectmen suggested cutting $66,000 from the salary budget. Selectman Beth Jones said that the discussion centered on the fact that the department couldn’t fill enough slots at the academy to bring it back to 47 full-time members, according to the New Canaan Advertiser.

Krolikowski said the cut could result in the removal of an officer assigned to Saxe Middle School.

Selectmen also suggested a $84,000 cut to overtime and $36,000 to the vehicle budget. The total amount of cuts at $187,137 would leave the Police Department’s future budget at $100,000 more than the current year’s budget.
