New Canaan Police Officer Promoted To Sergeant: PD

NEW CANAAN, CT — The New Canaan Police Commission recently voted to promote Officer Kelly Coughlin to the rank of sergeant, effective Tuesday, according to the department.

In a news release, Police Lt. Marc DeFelice said Coughlin is the second woman in the history of the department to be promoted to the rank of sergeant.

According to DeFelice, Coughlin has been a dedicated member of the department since 2015 and is currently assigned to the Investigative Section.

Throughout her 11-year career with the department, Coughlin has served in numerous specialized roles, including field training officer, drone operator, department social media manager and Project Lifesaver administrator, according to DeFelice.

She is a graduate of the 2022 Fairfield County Detective School.

DeFelice also noted Coughlin has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to building strong relationships throughout the New Canaan community.

She has served as a school liaison officer at New Canaan Country School, West School and First Presbyterian Nursery School.

She has also served as the department's Linked Autism Safety Project administrator and Civilian Police Academy coordinator, according to DeFelice.

"The department is especially proud of Sergeant Coughlin's dedication and contributions to Special Olympics," the release reads, "reflecting her continued commitment to community service and engagement."

Coughlin has also been honored with a number of awards, including a Meritorious Duty award, excellence in physical fitness and the department's Lt. Stephen W. Wood Officer of the Year Award, according to DeFelice.
