New Canaan Preservation Alliance Files Appeal to Save 1913

The New Canaan Preservation Alliance Files Appeal of P&Z Decision on Library

August 5, New Canaan, Conn.—The New Canaan Preservation Alliance announced today that it has filed an appeal with the State Supreme Court in Stamford of the New Canaan Planning and Zoning Commission’s conditional approval of the New Canaan Library’s application to build a proposed new, New Canaan Library at 151 Main St.

“We are exploring every avenue to save the historic 1913 Library Building, and strongly believe that in considering the Library’s application, it was incumbent upon the Planning & Zoning Commission to follow its own Village District Guidelines and the Plan of Conservation and Development,” said Neele-Banks Stichnoth, president of the Alliance Board. “In its conditional approval of the Library’s application, P&Z commissioners have left preservation of the 1913 Building to the Library, the group that intends to demolish the existing library building, including the original 1913 landmark building. NCPA and its committee, Friends of Our 1913 Library, continue to support the construction of a new library in New Canaan. We have initiated this appeal to protect our legal rights moving forward. Our hope is that the New Canaan Library Board will now make a serious effort to develop a plan that preserves this iconic building, in situ, a building that has been a symbol of the New Canaan Library—and New Canaan itself—for over 100 years.”

The NCPA is represented by Patricia Sullivan, of Cohen and Wolf in Westport.
