On Monday, November 4th, the Gold Star Walk memorial at Mead Park was re-dedicated in a ceremony sponsored by the Public Works Department and the New Canaan Beautification League. The memorial walk was established in 1946 in honor of 38 New Canaan servicemen who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II. In 2001, the Gold Star Walk was rehabilitated through the efforts of residents Jim Bach and Keith Simpson. Public Works recently planted 16 new trees funded by the New Canaan Beautification League to replace 16 of the original 38 trees that were planted in 1946 but had died over the years. Jim Bach spoke at the ceremony along with First Selectman Kevin Moynihan to recall the history of the Gold Star Walk and memorial.
Finally, banners featuring 38 local veterans are on display this month on lamp posts on Main and Elm Streets. An Eagle Scout service project of resident Jack Goetz, a member of BSA Troop 70, the banner display is titled “New Canaan Honors our Veterans”. The project was funded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Exchange Club of New Canaan, and coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce and the Public Works Department.
