New Canaan Schools To Host Childhood Behavioral Specialist Lecture

The event will be held in an effort to help parents understand and navigate challenging behavior in their children, district officials said.

NEW CANAAN, CT – In an effort to help parents understand and navigate challenging behavior in their children, New Canaan Public Schools will join with the East, West, South and Saxe parent teacher councils and the NCHS Parent Faculty Association to present a lecture from Dr. J. Stuart Ablon this month.

According to a news release provided by the school district, the lecture is also co-sponsored by the New Canaan Community Foundation and New Canaan Cares. It will be held Nov. 8 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the New Canaan High School auditorium.

Speaking on "The Collaborative Problem Solving" model, Ablon will illustrate how this evidence-based practice helps parents understand and manage difficult behavior through positive communication skills with their children.

Parents will develop a better understanding of the underlying reasons for their children's behavior and will learn vital skills to foster supportive relationships with their children, according to the district.

Additionally, parents will learn ways to help their children to build problem solving skills and to increase positive behavior at home.

Ablon is an accomplished author, psychiatrist and faculty member of Harvard Medical School, according to the district. He has been widely recognized as one of the leading voices in childhood and adolescent psychiatry and has lectured amongst parents and professionals across a wide range of mental health and educational disciplines.

He has been ranked #5 on the list of the world’s top rated keynote speakers in the academic arena for his dynamic and engaging presentations. His research in the field has led him to author three books.

Along with his work as a lecturer, Ablon is an associate professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the founder and director of Think:Kids within the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He received his clinical psychology doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley and conducted his training at Massachusetts General Harvard Medical School.
