New Canaan Student Qualified in Skating Championship

New Canaan High School 9th-grader Isabella Salant qualified after winning a pewter medal as part of the Team Image Synchronized Skating Team

NEW CANAAN, CT- New Canaan High School 9th-grader Isabella Salant and Westport 8th-grader Layla Reejsinghani qualified at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Eastern Sectional Championships in Richmond, VA after winning a pewter medal as part of Team Image Synchronized Skating Team.

The skaters are in the Intermediate team. Sarah Meyers, a 10th-grader at Stamford High won a bronze medal at sectionals as part of the Novice line. The team is based out of Yonkers, N.Y. and they were in Kalamazoo, MI for the US Figure Skating Synchronized Skating Championships last week.

During the competition, teams are judged on  technical ability, speed, synchronization, and artistry. Teammates practice several times per week.

There are several basic elements that must be executed to music during a routine, but coaches have latitude in choreographing each element and the transitions between elements.
