New Canaan Students Complete Soundwaters Research Intensive

NEW CANAAN, CT — Five New Canaan students in grades 10 through 12 spent the spring studying marine ecosystems and environmental change through SoundWaters Research Intensive.

According to a news release, New Canaan High School students Victoria Tremblay, Eva Alexander, Connor Flood and Caitlin Neville and St. Luke's School student Evi Wald gained firsthand experience conducting field-based scientific studies.

Based at the Cohen SoundWaters Harbor Center on Stamford Harbor, SRI allows high school students to conduct original studies in marine science, biodiversity, water quality and climate-related environmental changes, according to the release.

Tremblay and Wald researched salt marsh fish populations and dietary habits, while Alexander and Neville studied oyster wasting disease in wild populations, according to the release.

"One of the most rewarding parts of this program is seeing students grow into confident young researchers," SoundWaters Director of Education Christina Genz said in a news release. "They leave with real-world field experience, stronger analytical skills and a greater understanding of the importance of Long Island Sound."

Scholarships for SRI are made possible through support from the Munzer Foundation, 11th Hour Racing and the Pettee Family, the release noted.
