New Canaan YMCA Teaches Community to Commit to Fit

The Y is helping the New Canaan Community form healthy habits in 2016.

This January, the New Canaan YMCA will offer its 13th annual Commit to Fit program. This incentive program works to help individuals make a commitment to fitness and attain it beyond the first 30 days of the New Year, establishing a healthy lifestyle change that includes exercise.

The program began January 1 and will run through April 17. To complete the program and be eligible for prize drawings from local merchants, participants must complete at least 39 workout sessions during the 15-week period. Workout sessions include any 30-minute physical activity done at the Y – whether an individual workout in the Wellness Center, a group fitness class, a personal training session, swimming laps in one of the pools, etc. Workouts are tracked by a “Commit to Fit Calendar Card” which is given to each participant. Each workout session must be signed off by a Y employee to verify the session.

In a recent article featured on the site www.webmd.com, 10 Easy Ways to Make Exercise a Habit, the number one tip for individuals trying to establish a successful exercise routine was to include a variety of activities. The Y offers everything from The Zone to Zumba, swimming to spinning, and core training to cardio. There’s something for everyone to become healthier, stronger, and happier at the Y!

In the month of January there is also an opportunity for non-members to kick-start their fitness routine with a free 15-day trial at the Y, and if they join at any point during this time the joiner fee will be waived. The Y wants to ensure that everyone is able to reach their personal wellness goals in 2016, and will be providing a free personal training session for all new members.

Along with the triumph of successfully committing to make exercise a part of their lifestyle for the duration of the program, participants are also enticed to complete the program with variety of prizes generously donated by local merchants with whom the Y has partnered with for Commit to Fit.

In order to participate in the program, members may register and purchase their $10 calendar card throughout the month of January. The first 150 members to register will also receive a free Commit to Fit t-shirt. Participants must be at least 15 years old, and families are encouraged to join the program together.
