New Car Tax Proposal Could Raise Millions: How Much Does Your Town Stand To Get?

More than 35 cities and towns in the state would collect more than $1 million if the General Assembly approves the car tax proposal.

By Jack Kramer, Patch Correspondent

HARTFORD, CT — One of the tax-generating bills being debated in the General Assembly would allow towns to impose a fee of $50 per vehicle registered in the town. The language is part of a bill that would also raise the sales tax from 6.35 to 6.99 percent – and having the towns take the estimated $400 million it would bring in to spend on town – not state – projects.

The car fee tax hasn’t gotten a lot of attention, but if passed it would raise millions for many of the largest municipalities in the state. Stamford, which has more cars registered in its borders than any other municipality, would stand to collect more than $4 million.
