New Historic Trail Opens In New Canaan

A new historic trail has opened at the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society, allowing visitors to learn in a beautiful outdoor setting.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A new historic trail has opened at the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society campus, allowing visitors to learn about the town's history in a beautiful outdoor setting.

According to Executive Director Nancy Geary, the trail was completed Sept. 17. Visitors can walk along paved paths outside the museum's various buildings, along which placards conveying historical information can be read.

"The idea was to create a way for visitors to learn about the historic buildings whenever they wanted, whether the museum was open or closed," Geary said. "During the [coronavirus] pandemic, we realized the importance of outdoor spaces within which to explore, learn and relax."

Geary noted the chairs, benches and picnic tables along the trail provide spaces for people to enjoy the campus, while the interpretive signage allows them to read and learn at their own pace.

Signage has also been placed in front of the Cody Drug Store, New Canaan's first drug store located off the Town House, originally opened in 1845 and now an exhibit the general public can explore.

A new outdoor sculpture by artist Robert Gregson is also on display for guests to enjoy, and the society plans to instal a sign at the Gores Pavilion in Irwin Park as well, according to Geary.

"The brick terrace includes the names of the 19 women leaders of New Canaan whom we celebrated as part of the 100th anniversary of the enactment of the 19th Amendment," Geary said. "That terrace is dedicated to the daughters of Ashley and Chris Shackelton. Ashley was instrumental in this project and wanted her daughters to be inspired by these women leaders."

For those who wish to further explore the town's history, Geary noted the museum and historical society has a new exhibition by architect Nina Anker on display, in addition to freshly painted and restored historic house museums and other fun programs and events held throughout the year.
