UPDATE: Elderly Man Pronounced Dead After Hit-and-Run in New Canaan
The man struck by a car while standing at a mailbox on Oenoke Ridge Road was later declared deceased.
9:55 p.m.: Police believe the side-view mirror left at the scene of the crime belongs to a 2002-2010 GMC vehicle. The victim is expected to be identified late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
6:46 p.m.: An elderly man, approximately 84 years old, was standing at a mailbox on Oenoke Ridge Road near the Pound Ridge border when a car struck him, according to police. The victim was later pronounced deceased after being brought to Norwalk Hospital. The incident is being declared a hit-and-run as the driver left nothing behind aside from a side-view mirror and other fragments of glass.
"We're in the infancy stage of investigating this accident," Sergeant David Ferris said Wednesday evening at the scene. "We've got investigators on the scene and we're waiting for detectives. We've got the scene shut down, not even firemen can walk through."

Police received a call at 4:41 p.m. from a driver on Oenoke Ridge Road who spotted the victim laying in the road. Investigators are currently at the scene with tape measurers and cameras, recreating the crime scene to scale. Police are not releasing the name of the victim until all family members have been notified.
Pound Ridge police are assisting with investigations, as police believe the driver was headed toward the New York border. Oenoke Ridge Road is closed at the intersection of Barnegat Road and West Road.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed or heard the hit-and-run to notify authorities at 203-594-3500.
Wednesday's incident is the second hit-and-run to occur on Oenoke Ridge Road in less than three months. On May 21, 2010, Margaret McDonald of South Salem struck an 82-year-old bicyclist with her car while traveling northbound on Oenoke Ridge Road. The victim, Thomas Scheuer of New Canaan, survived with serious injuries. McDonald later turned herself in to New Canaan police on Aug. 3.
5:57 p.m.: On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4:20 p.m. a car traveling northbound on Oenoke Ridge Road struck a pedestrian, propelling the person 20 to 30 feet, according to Selectman Rob Mallozzi, who helps manage the emergency operations center in New Canaan.
Preliminary reports are declaring the incident a fatality.
The accident is being reported as a hit-and-run, according to Mallozzi. It is still unclear whether the victim was male or female, but Mallozzi confirmed the victim is elderly.
Police found a side view mirror in the southbound lane, indicating the driver was headed toward New York. New Canaan police have contacted authorities in Pound Ridge.
Original story: Preliminary reports indicated there was a hit-and-run in New Canaan involving an 83-year-old woman. [Ed. note: Reports later confirmed the victim was in fact a male, approximately 84 years old.] The accident happened 30 minutes ago. The victim is conscious according to reports. Emergency responders have been called from other towns.
