Police have provided a list of safety tips to for New Canaan residents to keep in mind while trick-or-treating this Halloween.
NEW CANAAN, CT — Police have provided a list of safety tips to for New Canaan residents to keep in mind while trick-or-treating this Halloween.
In a Facebook post, police said residents should always check their children's candy before letting them eat it. Avoid homemade treats made by strangers.
Police also advise residents to always accompany their young children while they are trick-or-treating.

The following tips were provided by New Canaan police:
- If your child is old enough to trick-or-treat with friends, make sure everyone stays together and knows what time to come home. Be sure your child knows their home address and a guardians phone number in case of emergency.
- Teach your children to look both ways before crossing the street, and to use traffic signals and crosswalks.
- Turn your headlights on early to spot trick-or-treaters.
- Have your children carry glow sticks or flashlights.
- Remind them to walk, not run, from house to house.
- Keep candy away from your furry friends and keep pets prone to escaping behind doors or gates while answering the door.
- REMEMBER: If you see something say something!
