Prospective New Canaan Homebuyers: Check with Inland Wetlands

The town is seeing a number of Inland Wetland violations partially due to homeowners not checking whether their plans need permits.

The only way to know whether wetlands are present or absent is to have a lot field-tested by a certified soil scientist, according to the New Canaanite.

Studies and permits are required prior to earth-moving activities including filling or removing material, erecting structures in sensitive areas and diverting water.

Sometimes it’s easy to tell if wetlands are present such as being near a swampy area, but other times the naked eye can’t tell and testing is needed.
