Mike Lupica Among Staffers Laid Off From NY Daily News: Report

The latest in a series of downsizings at the New York tabloid include the sports writer from New Canaan.

The New York Daily News was hit Wednesday with another round of layoffs including the sports columnist resident Mike Lupica of New Canaan, according to a report on Politico attributed to “sources at the News.”

Other high-profile staffers axed on Wednesday beside Lupica — the prominent and provocative sports columnist who’s been with the News since 1977 — reportedly include sports editor Teri Thompson.

According to Politico’s sources, “news management and Lupica, who enjoyed one of the newsroom’s top salaries, were unable to come to terms on a new contract.”

The scope of the layoffs is still unclear, but sources at the News told Politico they impacted other departments at the paper as well as the newsroom.
