Sen. Murphy: America Not a Different Place After Election

Murphy said the country's diversity is its strength, but at times it can cause friction and tension.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy gave his thoughts on the election in a Facebook post that called for the country to keep working on things that still matter, even if people are upset with the results of the presidential election.

Murphy said he was obviously upset with the results of the election, but took joy in the fact that three out of four state referendums passed tighter gun controls across the country.

"Never in our lifetime has a candidate for president ran a more hate-filled, bigoted campaign," he said. "It felt like we took a step backward in our progress toward a more compassionate, inclusive nation. But that doesn’t have to be our fate. We can choose to take Donald Trump at his word last night and take steps to heal the wounds caused by this bitter and divisive election."
