Silvermine Arts Center Names 'Art Of The Northeast' Finalists

The 68th annual Art of the Northeast Exhibition is Silvermine's signature show, which is open to artists from Maine to D.C.

NEW CANAAN, CT — From Silvermine Arts Center: Silvermine Arts Center announced today the finalists in the 68th annual Art of the Northeast Exhibition, Silvermine’s signature show, which is open to artists from Maine to D.C. Patricia Hickson, Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum, served as the 2018 curator. The community is invited to the opening reception and awards presentation at the Silvermine Galleries on Sat., July 14 from 6 to 8 pm.

Patricia Hickson called the submissions to this year’s competition “a strong and diverse range of work,” and commented further on her task as curator: “My subjective decisions were grounded in objective criteria—a balance of creative and formal elements. Color, technique, and composition weighed equally with subject, concept, and individual style…. This vast and impressive range of work speaks to the many individual voices creating contemporary art today.”

Begun at Silvermine in 1949 as the New England Exhibition, Art of the Northeast is open to artists from Maine to D.C. Over the years, this distinguished exhibition has featured the work of many prominent artists including Louise Nevelson, Elaine de Kooning, and Milton Avery. Throughout its history, Art of the Northeast
has been a platform for both established and emerging artists, many of whom have gone on to receive national acclaim. Jurors have included major critics, curators, and directors from some of the most influential contemporary art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum.
