St. Luke’s Qualifies for State Competition and Hosts Tournament

More than 180 debaters attend tournament at St. Luke's. Two St. Luke's teams now qualified for upcoming State Championships.

St. Luke’s successfully hosted a December Connecticut Debate Association tournament that included 182 debaters from 15 area schools. Debating for St. Luke’s were teams Amelie Warneryd '20 (Weston) and Marco Volpitta '20 (Pound Ridge), Ruth Mercedes '20 (Ridgefield) and Laura Mercedes '20 (Ridgefield), Chris Walsh '20 (Fairfield) and Lily Tencic '20 (Easton), Jerry Rutigliano '20 (New Canaan) and Cate Mathews '21 (Wilton), and Amanda Millar '22 (New Canaan) and Aisha Memon '21 (Norwalk).

St. Luke’s faculty members Beth Yavenditti and Lisette Soto, and St. Luke’s parents Ingrid Warneryd and Donna Volpitta spent many hours organizing this large event that was held throughout the school. Current and former St. Luke’s parents, respectively Ron Gutstein and Patty Kekedjian, participated as judges.

At the tournament, the team of Amelie and Marco qualified for the Connecticut State Tournament which will take place in March 2019. They were also last year’s State Champions. The team of Ruth and Laura qualified for States in an earlier tournament.

This event would not have been possible without the help of those in the St. Luke’s community who volunteered throughout the day. Read more about St. Luke's Debate Team.
